The Evolutionary Logic of Civilizational Mortality: Extending Spengler through Systems Theory and Memetic Evolution

1. Introduction
Oswald Spengler’s The Decline of the West (Spengler, 1926/1928) offers a vivid analogy: civilizations are like living organisms, subject to birth, growth, maturity, decay, and death. Spengler proposes a morphology of world-historical cultures, each with its own soul, style, and seasonal lifecycle, culminating — inevitably — in decline and loss of creative spirit. Yet, Spengler leaves open a question of why mortality is built into civilizations: is decline simply metaphorical, or does it follow from deeper evolutionary or systemic laws?
This paper answers in the latter way. It argues that the pattern Spengler describes is not only analogous but explanatory — civilizations must die, because mortality is in fact an evolutionary advantage. Systems (biological, cultural, memetic) thrive by achieving power, innovation, and temporal strength — even if that commits them to inevitable decline. The thesis is this: civilizations that concentrate resources into temporal dominance — scientific, technological, aesthetic, institutional — generate conditions for their decline; but this process is not a failure or accident, but an inherent feature of evolutionary logic.
To develop this thesis, we draw on systems theory (especially general systems and flow-based theories), evolutionary biology (genes), memetics (memes), and the constructal law of flows (to be discussed later in the framework section). We propose that mortality — death, decline, obsolescence — is adaptive: it enables turnover, renewal, and innovation. One may say that freedom — which proved highly beneficial for scientific and technological advance but, when extended to the freedom to abandon inherited memetic traditions, also planted the seeds of both dominance and decline: it enabled the creative destruction necessary for a civilization to reach its peak, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for its own destruction.
In the context of the West, we contend that its Faustian nature — the striving for the infinite, for breaking bounds, for pushing forward — granted it epochal greatness. But this same Faustian power carries within it the seeds of decline: revolutions that reject earlier memes (Reformation, Enlightenment, 1789, 1848, 1968, up to contemporary woke progressive movements) are not anomalies but integral phases in a civilizational lifecycle. Our account maps these onto Spengler’s seasons, showing that the capacity for self-rejection is both the agent of renewal and of mortality.
By integrating Spengler with constructal theory, systems theory, and memetic evolution, the contribution is relatively novel in three respects:
We supply an evolutionary mechanism for civilizational mortality — not mere analogy but lawlike dynamics.
We point to freedom — also to abandon or mutate memetic material — as a central variable and something undertheorized in Spengler and many decline theories.
We connect cultural-genetic inheritance (genes) with cultural-memetic inheritance (memes), to show how material constraints (biological, environmental) and symbolic/cultural innovation interact in the timing and shape of decline.
Section 2 reviews existing theories of decline, showing how ours builds on and diverges from them. Section 3 lays out the theoretical framework: evolutionary logic, systems theory and flows, genes vs. memes, and the advantage of mortality. Section 4 applies this to the historical case of the West: we trace how freedom and memetic mutation have alternately powered and undermined the civilizational chain, mapped onto Spenglerian seasons. Finally, in the discussion and conclusion, we consider two versions of the Faustian tale — one redemptive, the other fatal — as outlooks for possible futures. Through this, we aim to show that the decline of civilization is not only natural and unsurprising, but governed by deeper laws of evolutionary and systemic being. And yet, we are active participants in the story that is unfolding and it is ending is yet to be written. By us.
2. Literature and Context
Explanations for civilizational decline have a long tradition. Edward Gibbon’s monumental The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire located Rome’s collapse in the erosion of civic virtue and the corrosive effects of luxury (Gibbon, 1776–1789). In the twentieth century, Arnold Toynbee suggested that civilizations rise or fall according to their responses to challenges, internal and external (Toynbee, 1934–1961). Joseph Tainter, working from an anthropological perspective, emphasized the diminishing marginal returns of complexity: societies collapse when the cost of maintaining intricate institutions outweighs their benefits (Tainter, 1988). Carroll Quigley proposed that civilizations grow when they channel surplus into productive instruments of expansion but stagnate once these instruments become institutionalized and resistant to change (Quigley, 1961).
Spengler’s distinctive contribution was to treat civilizations as organisms, each with a unique cultural soul and an organic lifecycle of roughly a millennium. Unlike Gibbon or Toynbee, Spengler insisted that decline is not contingent but necessary: the autumn and winter of a civilization are as intrinsic as its spring and summer. This deterministic morphology has also been criticized. Karl Popper dismissed Spengler’s “historicism” as unscientific prophecy, arguing that no future of human history can be deduced from present knowledge because the growth of knowledge itself is unpredictable (Popper, 1961). Yet defenders have argued that Spengler’s vision is not a scientific forecast but a morphological intuition of cultural destiny (McDonough, 2021).
Recent Spengler scholarship has extended his categories to Enlightenment and postmodern contexts. Crooks (2021), for instance, interprets the Scottish Enlightenment as a decisive phase in the Western wave-cycle, where rationalism both empowered and destabilized Western culture. Such work demonstrates that Spengler’s morphology can be fruitfully combined with modern historical case studies.
Against this backdrop, our paper advances a different extension: we claim that civilizational mortality has an evolutionary rationale. Mortality is not only observed, as in Gibbon or Spengler, nor framed as contingent, as in Toynbee or Tainter, but shown to be adaptive and necessary for the renewal of human cultural evolution.
3. Framework: Evolutionary Logic and Systems Thinking
Our approach draws together insights from evolutionary biology, systems theory, memetics, and flow-based models of order and entropy. Each offers a different angle on why mortality is not only natural but advantageous for complex systems.
In the following subsections we develop these ideas in a sequence that builds from biological principles to cultural and systemic ones. We begin with the foundations of natural selection and evolution. Next we turn to the relation between genes and memes, showing how cultural transmission parallels biological inheritance. We then introduce constructal theory, which explains how flows organize systems across scales. With this in place, we discuss two distinct evolutionary advantages of mortality: generational turnover and the concentration of temporal strength. Finally, we broaden the scope through general systems theory, which allows us to see how the same principles apply not only to organisms but also to civilizations. The section concludes by drawing these elements together into a synthetic explanation of civilizational mortality that extends Spengler’s morphology with a systemic, evolutionary rationale.
3.1. Natural Selection and Evolution
The first foundation of our framework lies in the principles of natural selection and evolution. Darwin’s insight that variation, inheritance, and differential survival produce adaptation remains the most powerful explanation of order in living systems (Darwin, 1859). Organisms are not designed with foresight; they emerge from cumulative processes in which advantageous traits are preserved because they increase reproductive success. Crucially, to prove itself in time, traits need to be reliably passed from generation to generation. New generations embody novel combinations of traits, and the success of a lineage depends not on avoiding death but on integrating mortality into the cycle of adaptation.
3.2. Genes and Memes
Richard Dawkins (1976) extended the logic of Darwinian selection to culture by introducing the concept of the meme: a unit of cultural transmission that replicates, mutates, and competes much like genes do. While genes govern biological inheritance, memes shape the symbolic and institutional orders in which humans live. The parallel is illuminating: both genes and memes evolve through replication with variation and selection, but memes travel through imitation and communication rather than reproduction.
A further distinction is important. Our biological moral intuitions — fairness, reciprocity, group loyalty — were shaped in small bands of hunter-gatherers on the savannah (Cosmides & Tooby, 1992). These intuitions remain with us, but they are adapted to conditions of face-to-face interaction, not to the scale of complex states or civilizations. Memes, by contrast, provide new rules and institutions that make life in large, anonymous societies possible. Writing, law, markets, and religious traditions are all memetic adaptations that extend human cooperation beyond the scale of kinship and clan. Reliable transmission of memes from generation to generation is key to their survival and to the survival of their host culture.
3.3. Constructal Theory
Adrian Bejan’s constructal law provides another perspective on how systems evolve. The law holds that for a flow system to persist in time, it must evolve in such a way that it provides easier access to the currents that move through it (Bejan, 2012). Whether in river basins, vascular networks, or transportation grids, patterns emerge that optimize the flow of energy, matter, or information. Cultures and civilizations, too, can be seen as flow systems: institutions, cities, and technologies channel resources along paths of least resistance. Over time, these channels become more complex, efficient, and far-reaching — yet the very specialization that enables efficiency may also make systems brittle, less able to adapt to shocks.
3.4. The Advantages of Mortality
Evolutionary theory underscores that mortality is not simply a limitation but also a benefit. Two distinct advantages are worth emphasizing. The first is turnover: death clears the way for new generations. Each generation carries novel combinations of genes, and in cultural terms, new constellations of memes. This continual recombination allows the possibility of improvement over what came before, preventing stagnation and permitting adaptation to changing environments.
The second, and more decisive, advantage is that mortality permits strategies focused on short-term success at the expense of longevity. Organisms, machines, or social systems can be optimized for maximal throughput and competitive advantage, even if this reduces their lifespan. Consider the antelope: its physiology is tuned for bursts of speed, giving it an edge against predators. This high-performance design, however, wears the body out; antelopes live shorter lives than slower but less stressed animals. A similar trade-off is evident in human technology. A Formula One racing car is engineered for maximal performance but must often be rebuilt after a single race, while an ordinary road car lasts for decades at lower intensity. In both cases, mortality — whether of individual organisms or machines — is the price of extraordinary temporal strength.
Civilizations exhibit the same logic. By concentrating resources on achieving power, scale, and expansion, they gain dominance but reduce longevity. Mortality is thus not a flaw but a structural feature of systems that maximize temporal performance.
This insight provides the bridge to our next step. If death confers these advantages in biology and technology, the same must hold for cultural and civilizational systems. In the following section, we will trace how these two advantages of mortality — generational renewal and short-term dominance — illuminate the development of civilizations in general and the trajectory of the West in particular.
3.5. General Systems Theory
General systems theory links biological, cultural, and physical processes to civilizational dynamics. Developed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1968) and others, it emphasizes that complex systems across domains share common principles of organization, adaptation, and decay. Systems maintain themselves through the flow of energy and information, but at the cost of producing entropy. Order is always temporary, requiring constant input of resources, and breakdown is inevitable when adaptive capacity is exhausted.
By situating natural selection, memetic evolution, constructal flows, and the advantages of mortality within this systems perspective, we can see how the same structural logics apply to civilizations. Civilizations, like organisms or machines, maintain order by channeling flows, exploiting resources, and discarding obsolete forms. Their eventual decline follows not from accident but from the same systemic constraints that govern all complex adaptive systems.
4. Analysis: The Rise and Fall of the West
When viewed through the lens of evolutionary and systemic principles, the history of the West since 1500 illustrates how freedom has been both its source of unparalleled strength and the origin of its decline. From the early modern period, Western societies achieved extraordinary dominance in science, technology, exploration, and economic growth. By the nineteenth century, a small group of European powers and their offshoots controlled the majority of the globe’s territory, trade, capital and GDP. This dominance was not accidental: the freedom to experiment, to pursue inquiry without constraint, and to reorganize social and political institutions gave the West a unique advantage over more static, less changing culture.
Yet freedom also carried a hidden cost. The same liberty that fostered innovation also included the freedom to abandon cultural inheritance — the religious, moral, and traditional frameworks that had previously anchored social life. When mores and traditions function as the immune system of a civilization, limiting destructive impulses and preserving continuity, their erosion leaves societies vulnerable. Once these defenses weaken, disruptive movements act like diseases attacking the body. The memetic material is exposed to mutation and decay.
The sequence is visible in the West’s own history. The Reformation shattered the unity of Christendom, unleashing pluralism and conflict but also liberating new energies. The Enlightenment further challenged inherited authority, replacing it with rationalist and often utopian ideals. The great revolutions — from 1789 in France through 1917 in Russia — destabilized political and cultural continuity in the name of freedom and equality, usually with catastrophic violence. The cultural revolution of 1968, and more recently the “woke” movement, have intensified the pattern: inherited norms, institutions, and even the authority of science, are systematically delegitimized.
These episodes function like successive infections in a body whose immune system has been steadily weakened. Religions, traditions, and mores once carried the memes that gave coherence to Western civilization. As these carriers have been abandoned, cultural DNA has been disrupted. Freedom remains — but increasingly as the freedom to reject the very elements that once sustained collective vitality. The result is a slow cultural wasting, a self-inflicted cancer brought on by the very principle that had enabled earlier greatness.
So far, none of these illnesses have proven fatal. Each time, Western societies have managed to recover, adapt, or reinvent themselves, though often at a cost of compromise with its inheritance. Yet the cumulative weakening of the cultural immune system suggests that one next crisis could be decisive. This brings us to the final discussion, where we consider the possible endings of the West’s life.
5. Discussion and Conclusion: Faustian Endings
Spengler characterized the West as a Faustian civilization, driven by the will to infinity. It is fitting, then, to end with Faust himself. Two versions of his fate have shaped the imagination of the West: Goethe’s redemptive ending and his tragic ending in the traditional, authorless legends of Faust that were the basis for Goethe’s work.
Goethe’s ending presents Faust as saved by divine grace. After a lifetime of restless striving, angels intervene to carry him to heaven. Yet this resolution is problematic. It presupposes a direct divine intervention that suspends the consequences of Faust’s choices. Our account has acknowledged God only between the lines: not as one who interrupts history, but as the transcendent source from which the memetic inheritance of religion, morality, and tradition has emerged. These were the carriers of cultural DNA that once sustained the West. If this inheritance is abandoned, no deus ex machina will restore it just as no deux ex machina created it.
The second interpretation — that Faust defines what is good for himself and redeems his striving by pursuing it — is equally troubling. Adam and Eve were granted the capacity to distinguish good from evil, but not the authority to define what is good or evil. To treat good and evil as self-defined is to cut the thread of memetic inheritance altogether. Such a Faust does not return to the traditions that anchored civilization; he becomes their negation.
Older versions of the Faust legend were far less forgiving and, one could dare say, wiser than Goethe’s intellectual effort. In the sixteenth and seventeenth-century tales, Faust is not redeemed but damned: his pact with the devil ends in destruction, not salvation. These stories may strike modern readers as harsh, but they are more realistic in their refusal of both divine rescue and self-invented redemption. Actions have consequences; the abandonment of inherited moral substance leads not to transcendence but to ruin. This darker ending resonates more closely with the systemic logic we have traced: civilizations that exhaust their memetic inheritance do not find salvation in grace or in self-justification, but in decline and death.
Placed against the background of Western decline, these endings illustrate two false hopes: one in miraculous intervention, the other in self-legislation of values. Both bypass the deeper truth suggested by Spengler and clarified in our extension: civilizations live and die by the integrity of their cultural inheritance. Freedom gave the West extraordinary dominance, but freedom to abandon its own memes, to allow spontaneous and deliberate mutations, has left it vulnerable. Whether the West survives further crises will not depend on angels or self-justifying striving, but on whether it can reconnect with and preserve the memetic substance that once gave it coherence.

Excellently done. True Spenglerians are weary of those familiar fans who use his ideas while contradicting their essential premises. None of that nonsense here.
